URBAN LINE DANCE – a Potted History.
Urban Line dance has been in Fareham since 2012 when its founder, Ray Hodson, started an Absolute Beginner class on Monday evenings at Ranvilles Community Centre. The following year Ray’s Beginner class was born on Wednesday evenings at Fareham Academy, then, in 2014, the Thursday Morning class was started at Stubbington Methodist Church Hall. Ray then moved the Monday class from Ranvilles Community Centre to Fareham Academy and it became an Improver / Intermediate class. Ray ran all the classes until 2017 when I took over the Wednesday Beginner class and the first session of the Thursday class which was for Beginners.
In 2018 when Ray decided to step down completely, I took over all the classes and have enjoyed doing so ever since. I soon decided to start the Monday Class 1 hour earlier, for beginners, so that class now begins at 6:30pm and covers all levels. Ray still pops in to a couple of the classes to teach a new dance or revise an old one.
Normal classes were interrupted during each Covid lockdown, but with the help of Zoom many of us kept going. I really enjoyed hosting those sessions but it was not the same as dancing in lines with others around us. Hopefully we won’t have to do that again, but if we do, the option is always there. Long live Zoom!!
When restrictions were lifted slightly and I was able to restart classes, I had to keep a close eye on numbers so we could observe social distancing rules. This meant that I had to split the Thursday class into 2 sessions and even then, there was not enough room for everyone. So, I started a “temporary” overflow class on Tuesday mornings 11am until 12:30pm at the Stubbington venue. That class just grew and is no longer temporary. I have also started an Absolute Beginner class earlier on Tuesday mornings and adjusted the times of the classes to make them fit. The Absolute Beginner class began with just 4 members but has grown since we started in September and seems to keep growing. The Thursday class is no longer split and covers all levels starting with Beginners at 9:15am, finishing with intermediates at 12:45pm.
I am so lucky to have Jackie to help me and keep me on the straight and narrow on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Lesley on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I really don’t know how I’d manage without them! They are worth their weight in gold.
I continue to enjoy all the classes and thank class members for making each session a time to remember. Hopefully we’ll be line-dancing in our classes for many years and enjoying the fun and friendships for a long time to come.
Best wishes to you all, and keep dancing
Brenda xx
